Day Treatment vs. Outpatient Rehab: Which One is Right For Me?

day treatment vs outpatient rehab

While millions of people in the United States live with substance abuse or addiction, only about 1 in 10 will get the treatment they need to overcome these conditions. There are many barriers that keep people from getting help for substance abuse or addiction, including financial concerns, worry about losing their job, or the stigma of addiction.

Some people may be hesitant to seek treatment because they fear the unknown. If you live with substance abuse and need treatment, you must learn about your treatment options and explore the levels of care in addiction treatment. When you know what to expect, you are more likely to feel confident and committed to treatment and recovery.

There are many alternatives to inpatient or residential treatment. Many people value the flexibility of outpatient treatment. Several levels of care, including day treatment and outpatient treatment, allow people to find a good balance between addiction treatment and their day-to-day responsibilities.

But what are the differences between day treatment vs. outpatient treatment, and how do you know which one is right for you? Contact the Woburn Addiction Treatment specialists today for more information about choosing a treatment program.

What is Day Treatment?

Day treatment is also known as partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) and offers the most intensive treatment of all outpatient programs. People are engaged in therapeutic activities throughout the day on most days of the week but return home in the evening, making it an ideal choice for those who require intensive treatment but want to stay connected to work and family.

Day treatment programs require a significant investment of time–usually the equivalent of a full-time job. Patients in day treatment programs generally attend treatment every weekday for 6-8 hours. During this time, people participate in evidence-based and holistic treatments that support addiction recovery. These activities include:

  • Evaluations
  • Individual counseling
  • Group therapy
  • Holistic therapies and recreation
  • Education
  • Skill-building and practice

People in day treatment programs have a chance to learn valuable skills to avoid relapse in the future and practice them in their day-to-day lives at home. People may start out in a day treatment program or participate in this level of care after completing an inpatient or residential program.

What is Outpatient Rehab?

Outpatient rehab offers many of the same therapies and recovery-related activities of day treatment but provides more flexibility and a less rigorous schedule. People in outpatient rehab can often continue to work or care for family members while getting the high-quality treatment they need to overcome addiction.

Outpatient drug and alcohol rehab requires a smaller commitment of time. People in outpatient treatment may spend 10-15 hours a week in therapeutic activities. Many facilities allow patients to schedule treatment sessions around their work schedule and other responsibilities. Some offer treatment in the evening or on weekends to maximize flexibility.

Like day treatment, people in outpatient addiction treatment participate in group therapy, education, skill-building, and individual counseling. They may also engage in family therapy when appropriate.

The length of time someone spends in day treatment vs. outpatient rehab depends on the severity of their addiction and other personal and environmental factors.

Day Treatment vs. Outpatient Rehab: Understanding the Differences

Day treatment and outpatient rehab programs both offer high-quality treatment and can support your recovery. Understanding the differences between these levels of care can help you make the best choice to meet your treatment needs.

Day treatment

  • Meets daily
  • Very rigorous
  • Highly structured
  • Greater time commitment
  • Less flexibility to accommodate work, childcare, and other responsibilities
  • Generally shorter length of time in treatment

Outpatient rehab

  • May take a longer time to complete the program
  • Does not meet daily
  • More free time
  • Flexibility to balance treatment and other daily responsibilities
  • Greater chance of being exposed to triggers

It’s important to consider all of the pros and cons of day treatment vs. outpatient rehab before starting a treatment program. Choose the level of care that can meet your needs and offer the support you require to overcome addiction.

Which Level of Care is Right For Me?

No two people have the same experiences in life or recovery from addiction. For this reason, there are several levels of care in addiction treatment that can meet people’s unique needs.

Before beginning a treatment program, a doctor or addiction specialist will evaluate your needs. You will provide information about your substance use, medical and mental health history, substance abuse treatment history, and other personal information. Your treatment team will consider your treatment needs and goals before recommending a level of care.

Your treatment team will also consider your environment. If you live with people who are actively using drugs or alcohol, or if you can’t avoid people who are, an outpatient program may not be a good fit for you. Similarly, you may require a higher level of care if you have intense cravings or significant mental health or medical care needs.

Generally, the level of care and type of treatment you require depends on the length and severity of your addiction. It’s critical to choose the level of care that best meets your needs and can provide the level of care and support you require.
