PHP vs. IOP: Understanding The Difference

PHP VS IOP understanding the difference

Researching different addiction treatment programs in the Boston area can be confusing. There is a lot of new lingo and jargon that you may not recognize. With terms like “residential,” “intensive inpatient,” “partial hospitalization,” and “IOP” flying around, deciding on a treatment program can be overwhelming. To help you make the right decision and obtain the best care possible, we’re here to break down everything you need to know about the difference between PHP and IOP treatment programs. And, we’ll even help determine which one is right for you.

What are Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) Like?

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) are sometimes referred to as day treatment. During PHP, staff provides around-the-clock supervision and support. Individuals meet with the clinical team five days each week from 9:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. After treatment, patients may live in supportive housing or sober living.

PHP is very similar to inpatient or residential treatment. This program provides comprehensive counseling, behavioral therapy, nutritional guidance, and medical support. PHP helps patients get sober by introducing structure into their lives while minimizing high-risk encounters that may trigger substance abuse.

The Ideal Candidate for PHP in the Boston Area

There are many types of people who can benefit from a partial hospitalization program in the Boston area. PHP is a great option for people who:

  • Have completed an inpatient or detox program, but are still considered high-risk for relapse
  • Struggle with severe episodes of drug or alcohol use, are at risk of overdose, or struggle to deal with cravings
  • Are still experiencing some withdrawal symptoms and require medical management

In other words, PHP is usually considered the next step for people who have completed inpatient rehab but don’t quite feel stable or confident enough to live on their own or attend an outpatient program.

What is Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP)?

Intensive outpatient programming (IOP), is a level of care that acts as a buffer between PHP and outpatient (OP). It is less structured and time-consuming than PHP, but more demanding and intensive than regular OP. At Woburn Wellness Addiction Treatment, the IOP program runs five days a week from 9:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. During these 3.5 hours, patients participate in group and individual therapies just like they would in PHP.

IOP may also be held in the evenings, offering treatment to those who may not be able to attend a daytime program. Evening or nighttime IOP is the same as daytime IOP, but it often only runs four days a week instead of five.

Who Should Attend IOP in the Boston Area?

IOP is only for people who have already completed withdrawal and do not require 24/7 care and supervision. This means people who have completed detox and inpatient or PHP can transition into IOP for their next level of care. IOP is also a suitable option for people who:

  • Meet the diagnostic criteria for mild substance use disorder and do not require detox
  • Cannot take time away from work, school, or family to attend a higher level of care
  • Cannot afford the high cost of residential treatment or whose insurance will not cover PHP
  • Have a supportive and sober home environment

If you struggle with drug cravings, have a history of relapse, or have medical needs that need regular monitoring, IOP may not be the right choice for you.

Things to Consider When Choosing PHP or IOP

Figuring out which level of care is right for you can be confusing, especially if you’ve never been to rehab before or if you are still actively using drugs and alcohol. While you should always speak with an addiction specialist before making a decision regarding your care, there are three important factors to consider when deciding whether PHP or IOP is right for you. These include:

  • Treatment needs – Everyone is unique and has different treatment needs. If you are someone who needs frequent monitoring, support, and medical care, a higher level of treatment like PHP or inpatient may be more appropriate for you. A Massachusetts addiction counselor can help you determine how serious your addiction is, what kind of help you need, and what type of time commitment that help requires.
  • Insurance and finances – Another important factor to consider is your financial situation and your insurance. IOP, being fewer hours and less intensive than PHP, can be cheaper. Your insurance may also cover more hours of IOP than it does PHP. Speak with your insurance provider and go over your finances to see which program is the best fit for your financial situation.
  • Lifestyle needs – If you are a single parent, your lifestyle looks very different than a 19-year-old with no kids. Or, if you are a student you’ll need a flexible schedule that works around your classes. IOP is more flexible than PHP, but PHP hours may be able to work for you, too. Consider your daily schedule and your responsibilities to help you determine what type of rehab program is right for you.
