What is Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP)?

Intensive outpatient treatment, otherwise known as intensive outpatient programming (IOP) is a form of substance abuse treatment where patients are treated on a part-time basis. Unlike inpatient, IOPs do not require patients to live at any particular treatment facility. Instead, patients can live in their own homes or at a nearby sober living home.

If you choose to enroll in a Massachusetts IOP, you will be expected to come to the rehab facility for your treatment sessions. IOP sessions can be scheduled during the day or in the evening, giving you the flexibility you may need to take care of any responsibilities. Oftentimes, the length of IOP depends on your individual needs and circumstances.

Finding a Rehab Facility that is In-Network With Your Insurance Provider

While the ACA mandates insurance companies to cover mental health and addiction rehab services, it does not specify whether or not they have to provide coverage for all facilities. For instance, your insurance provider may cover treatment at one rehab in Massachusetts but not the next. That is because there are in-network and out-of-network options. In-network options are usually cheaper.

To figure out who is in-network with your insurance provider, you can do one of two things:

• Contact your insurance provider and ask them which facilities are in-network with your insurance plan.
• Speak to an admissions counselor and let them verify your insurance.

Rather than focusing on how long IOP lasts, it is more important to focus on getting the right care for you. IOP isn’t for everyone. Some people require a higher level of care to help them with withdrawal symptoms or underlying health conditions. Others will only take advantage of IOP once they have completed a residential program. How Long Does IOP Usually Last?

At Woburn Addiction Treatment, we have two IOP treatment options. The first is daytime IOP. Daytime IOP is offered Monday-Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. The program involves group and individual therapy sessions 5 times per week. This program meets for 3.5 hours per session.

The second IOP treatment option we offer in the greater Boston area is Nighttime IOP. This program is held four nights a week, Monday-Thursday, from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. These 3 hours sessions will involve group and individual therapy. Evening IOP is a great option for people who need rehab without missing work or school.

Most IOPs last anywhere from 1 to 6 months, with the majority of patients completing between 30 and 60 treatment sessions. However, IOP may last longer if your individual needs require further treatment. This is because Massachusetts IOPs will determine the length of rehab based on our specific needs and your progress during treatment.

What to Expect During IOP: A Treatment Timeline

While it is impossible to say just how long IOP will last for you, you can familiarize yourself with a general timeline of what happens during intensive outpatient program. This timeline may differ from one person to the next.

• Enrollment – During this phase, you speak with an admissions counselor about your substance use history, treatment goals, and recovery needs. This initial screening helps determine whether an intensive outpatient program is an appropriate level of care and is completed before treatment begins.
• Assessment – The assessment phase typically occurs during the first IOP session. An intake coordinator or clinical professional conducts a comprehensive evaluation of your medical history, mental health, substance use patterns, and current challenges. This information is used by the treatment team to develop an individualized treatment plan and provide a clearer estimate of how long the intensive outpatient program may last.
• Therapy and counseling – These sessions focus on relapse prevention, coping strategies, emotional regulation, problem solving, and building sober support networks. Licensed clinicians facilitate sessions and monitor progress throughout the course of treatment.
• Family participation – Family involvement can play an important role in recovery. Once you are familiar with the therapeutic process, family therapy sessions may be incorporated to improve communication, address relationship dynamics, and strengthen support systems. Participation is guided by clinical recommendations and individual circumstances.
• Evaluation – Each week you will meet with your primary counselor for an evaluation. These meetings focus on treatment goals, challenges, and areas of improvement. Ongoing evaluation allows the clinical team to adjust your treatment plan and determine the appropriate length of care.
• Aftercare planning – Once you are ready to be discharged, a drug and alcohol counselor will meet with you to help you develop an aftercare plan. This may involve 12-step support groups, other recovery groups, alumni meetings, or sober living. Aftercare planning may take anywhere from 1-3 sessions and is reserved for the end of treatment.
